      <image:title>Home - History</image:title>
<image:caption>Loretto Link emerged from and seeks to continue the spirit and work of the Loretto Community, which is both a congregation of women religious and persons who have joined as Co-members. The Congregation was founded in 1812, initially supporting teaching and later promoting the mission to “act for peace and work for justice because the Gospel urges us.” The mission priorities of the Loretto Community are care of the earth, immigration justice and abolition of nuclear weapons. Throughout its history, the Loretto Community has advocated for full equality and participation of women in all aspects of church, government and society. Loretto Link and the Loretto Community have many members in common and we work together often. Like many religious orders, the Congregation of the Sisters of Loretto is diminishing in numbers. Loretto Link, founded in 2017, is part of the exciting future of Loretto. Our members are steeped in Loretto's values of peace, justice, and hospitality. Together, we seek new ways to be of service to a hurt and damaged world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My wish to serve on Loretto Link’s board is rooted in my desire to see Loretto’s values and commitment to justice and peace live on into the future when there are no longer Sisters of Loretto in the US. I was educated by Loretto in high school and have tried ever since to live in accordance with the values I acquired then. I became a Comember of Loretto in 2008, and at the same time I was appointed as the Loretto NGO Representative to the United Nations. I was the first Comember to be named Loretto’s UN Rep, and was proud to engage in global advocacy in Loretto’s name for various issues such as poverty eradication, women’s equality, human rights, girls’ education, migrants’ rights, etc. Since leaving the UN position in 2017 I have been an active member of Loretto’s Latin America/Caribbean Committee, seeking to provide a humanitarian welcome to migrants and asylum seekers at the U.S./Mexico border. I have been an active Link member since its inception, serving on the first Board and handling various start-up projects such as applying for 501c(3) status and drafting initial by-laws for the organization. I also served on the Membership Working Group when it was first formed and led the effort to create the process for evaluating and accepting new applicants for Link membership. In 2022 I rejoined the Membership WG and am helping to create opportunities to foster community among our geographically dispersed members.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Good Trouble Working Group (GTWG) was formed to educate ourselves and work for racial equality. We named ourselves in honor of civil rights icon John Lewis. Our mission is to act for social change through direct action and partnerships. We formed to remain vigilant against the rise in white supremacy in the U.S. and align ourselves with groups that promote racial justice, fight disinformation, and champion crucial voting and civil rights laws that allow all to participate in democracy. Part of our work is to remain aware of cultural biases within ourselves and our communities. The Good Trouble group is currently learning about reparations and has partnered with The Poor People’s Campaign.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Working Groups - Just Loans Working Group</image:title>
<image:caption>The goal of the Just Loans Working Group is to help people get out of predatory debt. Small loans with high interest are made to people with little credit or access to pay unusual and immediate expenses such as car repairs, electric or heating bills, or necessary travel. Interest on these loans is usurious (35%-400%). When the loan is rolled over from one month to the next, the borrower owes far more than the original loan. This Working Group assists borrowers by paying off loans and working out a low or no-interest payment schedule on a case-by-case basis. We also work to educate ourselves and others about predatory loans and how they can be regulated.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Special Projects - Casa de Paz</image:title>
<image:caption>Loretto Link provided funding to help Casa de Paz, a nonprofit in Denver, CO, in their mission to reunite families separated by immigrant detention. Our contribution helped Casa de Paz clients with bonding and post-detention immigration assistance by helping provide safe places to stay while awaiting hearings during COVID. Casa de Paz is the only organization in Colorado offering post-release support to released immigrants. Many Loretto Link members have volunteered at Casa de Paz over the past several years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Loretto Link provided funding to help Casa Arcoiris, an organization in Tijuana, Mexico that shelters LGBTQ+ migrants seeking asylum in the US or refuge in Mexico. A main pipe burst, damaging the structure and forcing 40+ residents to use one bathroom and bathe outdoors with a hose. Loretto Link’s funds helped to fix the bathroom. Casa Arcoiris offers comprehensive services, housing, health care services, mental care health, legal services, educational workshops and social insertion in coordination with international, local and binational organizations.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Special Projects - Espacio Migrante</image:title>
<image:caption>Loretto Link has supported two shelters in Tijuana with general support donations, helping them work with migrants and also pivot to new work now that fewer people are seeking shelter. Loretto Link has supported Espacio Migrante, a cross-border organization based in Tijuana made up of an interdisciplinary and multicultural team led by women. Espacio Migrante works with migrant communities to promote access to their human rights, provide comprehensive care, and awareness in the local community about the vulnerable conditions of people in a context of mobility.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Special Projects - Loretto Justice Fellowship</image:title>
<image:caption>In partnership with the Loretto Community, Loretto Link supports the Loretto Justice Fellowship program, an innovative, community-responsive evolution of traditional faith-based service. Loretto Justice Fellows are students studying towards degrees in social work, policy and law; and they serve for one year with one of our local, mission-aligned partner organizations, while engaging in intentional community life with each other and with Loretto. The work of Loretto Justice Fellows furthers the mission and values of the Loretto Community and Loretto Link; enhances the capacity of local social justice organizations in El Paso; and deepens the personal and professional development of Fellows, individually and collectively.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Loretto Community and Loretto Link condemn Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine and call on all people of conscience to engage in whatever ways possible to make clear to our elected officials that we demand an immediate resumption of food and medical supplies into Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the ending of U.S. arms shipments to Israel. <image:title>Special Projects - Petition Support for the “Johnson Amendment”</image:title>
<image:caption>Loretto Link joined hundreds of nonprofits signing a petition sponsored by the Independent Sector to keep the “Johnson Amendment” which, for over 70 years, has protected 501(c)(3) organizations—including charities, foundations, and houses of worship—from partisan political pressures by prohibiting them from endorsing or opposing candidates for public office. The IRS has filed proposed legal settlement in a case that could allow churches to endorse political candidates from the pulpit and we want to make sure it does not receive court approval.</image:caption>
